Intro

Boating is one of the many "exciting" ways to get around the MOO. As of yet, the new part of the ocean has no sky tiles, so only a handful of the old objects like Kakuri Island, Stormfront Island, and the oil rig can be accessed from the air.

Types of Boats

There are three boats available at the moment. There are runabouts, cheap little boats that don't go very fast and can't be locked. So many of these have been stolen and dumped in the ocean/docked somewhere nasty, it's not even funny. They go for about $50,000, but you really should save for a fishing trawler. Trawlers are much better than runabouts, in that the helm is behind a nanotube door. They cost $189,000, but in my opinion it's worth it. The final type of boat is a yacht, which goes for $529,000, but have many nano-tube doors, and if the owner is on board anywhere at all, all of the doors are barred. It's incredibly hard to break into a yacht, and very easy to secure a yacht.

Boating, and How To Do it

When you get in the helm of a boat, you will have several commands available to you.

Undock undocks you from whatever dock you are currently at. Dock will present you a list of docks in range, and ask you to type a name to dock somewhere. So typing "dock port" would dock you at the Port of Freedom City if you were in range of Freedom City's docks. Throttle sets the speed of the ship, ranging from 0 to 100. Steer sets the heading of the ship in degrees. 0/360 is north, 90 is east, south is 180, and west is 270. Omap will show you a map of the surrounding ocean. The red <> are you or a nearby port (check for the ones that are off center for ports), black <>'s are others, and the rest of the colors are pretty explanatory, green usually being the mainland, blue being water, everything else being island or other bodies in the water. Watch will make you watch the helm if you aren't already (you automatically start watching it if you type a command such as steer or throttle), and ignore makes you ignore the helm.

                                     |
 heading  [ 150->0            ]                   gps pos  [ 121.348,37.7238  ]
 speed    [ 9.0 kt->15.0 kt   ]                   fuel     [||||||||||||||    ]

That is what you will usually see every tick you move a significant amount. If the horizon changes at all, you will also see the horizon in this readout. Above the readings is the compass. The | is you heading, and if you see a ^ nearby, that is an indication of how many degrees you are off.

                             _ _ _
  ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This is a readout of the horizon, showing an island or something far away. Islands will get bigger and expand to two lines, while ships and other things generally stay pretty small.
