Boating
Intro
Boating is one of the many exciting ways to get around the MOO. The expanded part of the ocean still has no sky tiles, so many places are only accessible by boat.
Types of Boats
There are four boats available at the moment, in varying fuel consumption and price. They are bought from Yachtzee in Botany Bay.
| Name | Cost | Lockable? | Top Speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Runabout | $12,500 | No | 19.4 knots | This is the cheapest and smallest boat. |
| Speedboat | $32,000 | No | 84 knots | This is the fastest boat. Like the runabout, it has no doors. |
| Fishing Trawler | $54,000 | Yes | 33 knots | Has a deck, a cargo hold, and a helm with a nanotube door. |
| Luxury Yacht | $265,000 | Yes | 42 knots | They have a large, several-tile deck, and several cabins and other rooms inside. |
Boating, and How To Do it
When you get in the helm of a boat, you will have several commands available to you.
undock - Undocks you from whatever dock you are currently at.
dock - Will present you a list of docks in range, and ask you to type a name to dock somewhere. So typing "dock port" would dock you at the Port of Freedom City if you were in range of Freedom City's docks.
throttle - Sets the speed of the ship, ranging from 0 to 100.
steer - Sets the heading of the ship in degrees. 0/360 is north, 90 is east, south is 180, and west is 270.
omap - Will show you a map of the surrounding ocean. The red <> is you or a nearby port (check for the ones that are off center for ports), black <>'s are other boats, and the rest of the colors are pretty explanatory, green usually being the mainland, blue being water, everything else being island or other bodies in the water.
watch -Will make you watch the helm if you aren't already (you automatically start watching it if you type a command such as steer or throttle)
ignore - Makes you ignore the helm.
| heading [ 150->0 ] gps pos [ 121.348,37.7238 ] speed [ 9.0 kt->15.0 kt ] fuel [|||||||||||||| ]
That is what you will usually see every tick you move a significant amount. If the horizon changes at all, you will also see the horizon in this readout. Above the readings is the compass. The | is you heading, and if you see a ^ nearby, that is an indication of how many degrees you are off.
_ _ _ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is a readout of the horizon, showing an island or something far away. Islands will get bigger and expand to two lines, while ships and other things generally stay pretty small.
Boat Map
This is a real time updated boat map by Jed. You can track your progress and location with it. By clicking on the boats, you can see their names.
Places that allow refuels
- FC docks
- Tortuga island
- Refinery (you have to cart fuel down from the top level)
- Macero
- Botany Bay
Tips and Tricks
- If you've just forayed into the world of boating, you will realise that it seems pretty hard to extract yourself when you hit some rocks. The trick is to throttle 0 till your boat speed falls to 0. Then extract yourself using reverse throttle ie throttle -number.
- You can store and retrieve non-lockable boats at the FC docks for $450 and $150 respectively. You don't want to lose your speedboat or your pilot-grinding runabout.
- To grind pilot, use boats. They can't crash and the only danger is running out of fuel, invest in a few jerry cans, fill them with gasoline and store them in your boat. If you run out of fuel, don't try to swim ashore as you will almost certainly drown. Find someone to bring his or her boat close to yours, so you can swim to it, or they can bring you fuel.
